Google Search Console explained: what it is and how it helps you
Search Console is Google's free tool that tells you how it sees your website. Which reports to look at, what they mean and what to do with them.

If you have a website and no Google Search Console, you are driving without looking at the dashboard. It is a free Google tool that tells you which of your pages it knows, which searches you appear for, how many clicks you get and whether anything is wrong. You do not need to be technical to get value from it.
How to sign up for Google Search Console
- Go to search.google.com/search-console with the business's Google account.
- Add your website. The "domain" option covers every version (with and without www, http and https).
- Verify it is yours, usually with a record in the domain's DNS.
- Submit your sitemap (usually at yourbusiness.com/sitemap.xml).
If someone else built your website, ask them to give you owner access.
The Search Console reports that matter
Performance
Shows which searches you appear for (queries), how often you are seen (impressions), how often you are clicked (clicks) and your average position. Gold for understanding what your clients actually search for.
Pages (indexing)
Which pages Google has in its index and which it does not, with the reason. Some exclusions are normal (duplicates, redirects). What to watch is that your important pages are indexed.
URL inspection
Paste a page's address and it tells you whether Google knows it, when it last visited and whether it can read it properly. From here you can request indexing, handy when you publish something new.
Sitemaps
To check Google reads your sitemap and how many pages it finds in it.
Experience and Core Web Vitals
Whether your website is fast for real users. More in website speed and Core Web Vitals.
Security and manual actions
Whether Google has detected malicious content or penalised you. Ideally both are empty.
What to do with what Search Console shows
- Queries with many impressions and few clicks: improve that page's title and description so people want to click.
- Searches you did not expect: they may deserve their own page or article.
- Important pages not indexed: check why and request indexing.
- 404 errors after a redesign: redirects are missing. More in redesign without losing Google rankings.
How often to check Search Console
Once a month is enough for a small business. And always after changing something important on the website.
Do not forget Bing
Bing has its own tool, Bing Webmaster Tools, and some AI assistants rely on its index. Why it matters: Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow.
On Nueva Página websites, registering the website in Search Console and submitting the sitemap is included in every plan.
Your first Google Search Console check, step by step
If you have never opened it, set aside half an hour for this first check. First, look at the pages report: make sure your home page and service pages show as indexed. Then open the performance report, choose the last three months and sort queries by impressions. You will see how people really search for you.
Finally, check the sitemaps section and the security section. If everything is green, you know the foundation works. If something is red, however, the tool explains why and links to Google's help. The official Google Search Console page also has short guides for each report. And if an important page is missing, start with why my website is not on Google. One check a month is enough.
Frequently asked questions
Is Search Console the same as Google Analytics?
No. Search Console tells you how Google sees you and what happens before the click; Analytics, what visitors do on your website.
Does requesting indexing make a page appear sooner?
It helps Google visit the page sooner, but it does not guarantee indexing or position.
Why does my website get few impressions?
It may be new, have little content or have indexing problems. See the list in why my website is not on Google.
Will my website be registered in Google Search Console?
Yes. At Nueva Página, registering the website in Search Console and submitting the sitemap is included in every plan. See how I work.
