Many business websites have a blog section with three posts from four years ago. Worse than having no blog is having an abandoned one: it suggests the business has stalled. Before starting one, it is worth knowing why and whether you can keep it going.

What a business blog is for

  • Appearing in informational searches: "how do I know if I need physiotherapy", "what a professional website includes". People not yet searching for you, but for your topic.
  • Answering questions before they are asked, saving you explanations.
  • Showing you know your field, which clients, Google and AI all value.
  • Having something to share on social media, newsletters or WhatsApp.

When a business blog is worth it

  • Your clients research before deciding (health, education, professional services, renovations).
  • You get many similar questions that can be answered in writing.
  • You can spend a few hours a month on it consistently, you or someone you trust.

When it is not

  • Your clients decide on impulse or proximity (a bar, a corner shop).
  • You will not be able to write consistently.
  • You would only do it "for SEO", with generic text that adds nothing.

What to write on your business blog

The best source is your clients' real questions. Each frequent question can be an article:

  • Indicative prices and what they depend on.
  • What the process or first session is like.
  • Honest comparisons ("A or B, which suits me?").
  • Common mistakes and how to avoid them.
  • Real cases (with permission and no personal data).

Quality before quantity

Google has made it clear it is not interested in mass-produced content made to rank. One helpful article a month is worth more than ten generic ones. Writing with AI is fine if the result is yours: your experience, your facts and your way of explaining. Guidelines in using AI to write website copy.

How to get the most from it

  • Link to your services: every article should lead to the page that solves the problem.
  • A title that answers what people search for.
  • Clear structure with subheadings, lists and a questions section.
  • Update articles that already work instead of always writing new ones.

How often to publish

Whatever you can sustain. One post a month for two years is far better than ten in a week followed by silence.

How to tell if your business blog is working

You do not need to check statistics every day. Once a month is enough to look at three things: which articles get visits from Google, which searches bring them and whether anyone then moves on to your service pages or gets in touch. You can see all of it for free in Google Search Console.

If an article attracts visits but nobody takes the next step, review the link to your service and the call to action at the end. On the other hand, if it gets no visits after a few months, it may answer something nobody searches for, or answer it worse than others. In that case, improve it with what your clients ask you. Google also explains in its guide to helpful, reliable content what it expects from an article, and it matches what your clients expect: clear answers from someone who knows the subject.

Frequently asked questions

Does a blog replace service pages?

No. Service pages convert; the blog attracts and leads to them.

How long should an article be?

As long as it takes to answer well. Many useful answers fit in 600–1,000 words.

Can I outsource my business blog?

Yes, but whoever writes it needs your expertise. A generic blog bought by the word rarely brings clients.

How long until a business blog shows results?

Usually several months. A new article takes time to rank, so it pays to start with the questions you are asked most.

What does a website need before starting a blog?

Clear service pages, because that is where the blog should lead. If you do not have them yet, see how much a website costs with several pages.
