Responsive websites: why mobile comes first for your business
Most of your clients will see you on a phone. Here is what a responsive website is, what goes wrong on many sites and how to check yours in five minutes.

Try this: search for your business on your phone and open your website as a client would. Can you read it without zooming? Is the phone number easy to find in two seconds? Can you tap the buttons without hitting the one next to it? If you hesitate on any of these, yours is not a responsive website designed for mobile, and mobile is where almost everyone is.
What "responsive" means
A responsive website adapts to the screen size: on a computer it might have three columns, and on a phone it stacks them into one, with text and buttons at a comfortable size. Same website, same content, rearranging itself.
Of course, almost every site claims to be mobile-friendly today. The difference is between those that "show up" on mobile and those that are designed for mobile.
What goes wrong on many responsive websites
- Tiny text or lines so long they are hard to follow.
- Small buttons or buttons too close together.
- Menus that cover half the screen or do not close properly.
- Pop-ups that are impossible to close on a phone.
- Giant photos that take forever on 4G.
- The phone number written as text, with no way to tap to call.
- Awkward forms, with fields that open the wrong keyboard.
Design for mobile first
The most reliable way to get it right is to design for the small screen first and then expand to desktop. It forces you to decide what matters:
- What does someone need to understand in the first five seconds?
- What is the main action: call, message on WhatsApp, book, request a quote?
- And which information do they need before taking that step: price, location, hours, reviews?
Whatever does not answer those questions probably does not belong, on desktop either.
How to check your responsive website in five minutes
- Open it on your phone, off wifi, and count how long it takes to show something useful.
- Try to call yourself, message yourself and find your address without zooming.
- Fill in your own contact form from your phone.
- Turn the phone sideways and check nothing breaks.
- Ask someone over sixty to find your opening hours. If they manage without help, then you are doing well.
Details that make a responsive website work
- Phone and WhatsApp always at hand, for example with a fixed button.
- Form fields that open the right keyboard (numbers for phone, @ for email).
- Images in several sizes, so phones only download the small one.
- Text of at least 16 pixels and enough contrast.

Responsive websites and Google: the version that counts
Google mainly looks at the mobile version of your website to decide how to rank it. If something only appears on desktop, for Google it barely exists. It explains this in its guide to mobile-first indexing. That is why your website should have the same content on mobile as on desktop, not a trimmed-down version.
In addition, most visits already come from phones; you can check current figures on StatCounter. So when you review your website, always start with the phone and then look at the desktop. If it also loads slowly, see website speed. A good responsive website goes unnoticed: it simply works.
Frequently asked questions
Is responsive the same as having an app?
No. A mobile-friendly site opens in the browser without installing anything; an app has to be downloaded. In practice, for almost every business, a good responsive website is enough.
Does Google look at the mobile version?
Yes. Google mainly indexes the mobile version of websites, so whatever is wrong on mobile counts against you.
Can my old site be adapted for mobile?
Sometimes it can be adapted, but if it is very old it usually works out better to rebuild it with mobile in mind from the start.
Are Nueva Página websites responsive?
Yes, all of them are designed from mobile upwards. Check by opening the published work on your phone.
