GEO: how to get ChatGPT and other AI assistants to recommend your business
More people ask AI instead of searching Google. What GEO is and what a small business can do to be recommended by ChatGPT and other assistants.

"Which physiotherapist would you recommend near me?" "Who builds websites with online booking at a good price?" More and more people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity these questions instead of searching Google. And AI does not give ten links: it gives two or three names. Either you are among them or you do not exist for that person.
Getting mentioned is starting to be called GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation). It is not magic or a new trick: it is largely doing very well what already worked.
How ChatGPT decides who to recommend
Assistants with search look things up on the web at that moment (often through search engines such as Bing or Google) and summarise what they find. So they need three things:
- To find you: your website indexed and easy to read.
- Understanding you: clear about what you do, where, for whom and at what price.
- To trust you: other sources talking about you (reviews, directories, mentions).
What to do on your website to be recommended by ChatGPT
Answer specific questions
In practice, AI quotes pages that answer something clearly. An FAQ section with complete answers ("A one-page website costs €349 + VAT, as a one-off payment") is gold. Avoid vague answers like "it depends, contact us".
Put the facts in plain sight
Indicative prices, the area you cover, hours, what each service includes. What is not written down, AI cannot repeat.
Use structured data
Marking up your business, services and FAQs with structured data helps machines understand them without ambiguity.
Make your website readable without tricks
If the text only appears after running lots of JavaScript, some crawlers will not see it. For this reason, a static website delivers the full text from the start.
Consider an llms.txt
It is a simple file summarising your website for language models. It is not mandatory and guarantees nothing, but it costs little; see what is llms.txt.
Getting recommended by ChatGPT beyond your website
Bing matters more than you think
Several assistants rely on Bing's index. So if your website is not on Bing, you are missing part of those answers. How to check in Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow.
Reviews and your Google profile
AI reads reviews and business profiles to recommend local businesses. Therefore, a complete profile with real reviews is one of the most profitable things you can do. Guide in Google Business Profile.
Mentions elsewhere
Directories in your sector, associations, local press, forums where you answer questions, clients' websites linking to you. In the end, every consistent mention (same name, website and phone) adds up.
What does not get you recommended by ChatGPT
- Filling your website with generic, mass-produced text.
- Repeating keywords like it is 2010.
- Buying or inventing reviews.
- Expecting results in a week: this is built over months.
How I apply it
Nueva Página websites ship with FAQs, structured data, llms.txt, registration in Google Search Console and Bing, and text that can be read in full without JavaScript. See what yours would cost with the cost calculator.
How to check whether ChatGPT recommends you
The simplest way is to ask as a client would. Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity and type your service and your town, for example "sports physiotherapist in Leeds". Then try more specific questions: prices, opening hours or "open on Saturdays". Note which answers include you and which do not.
If you do not appear, look at which businesses do and what their websites have that yours lacks. Usually it is clear answers, visible prices and recent reviews. In addition, Google explains on its page about AI features and your website that what works for normal search also works for its AI answers. Repeat the test every few months: the results change as you improve your website and your Google Business Profile. That is how you end up recommended by ChatGPT, little by little.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
At the time of writing there is no way to pay for an assistant to recommend your business in its normal answers. What works is being easy to find, understand and recommend.
How long until I see results?
Weeks for search engines to index changes and months to build reviews and mentions. It is a medium-term investment.
Does traditional SEO still work?
Yes. Almost everything that helps you rank on Google (helpful content, a fast website, clear facts, reviews) also helps AI mention you.
Will my website be ready to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Yes. Nueva Página websites ship with FAQs, structured data, llms.txt and registration with Google and Bing. Work out yours in the cost calculator.
