FAQ section on your website: why Google and AI love it

A good FAQ section answers doubts, saves calls and is among what Google and AI understand best. How to choose the questions and write the answers.

Question mark on a blackboard, like a website's FAQ section

More and more people do not type "dentist Dublin" into Google. They type a whole question, "how much does a filling cost in Dublin?", or ask ChatGPT directly. If your website's FAQ section has that question written down and answered, you have a good chance of being the answer.

Why an FAQ section works so well

  • They match searches word for word. A question with a short answer fits how people ask Google and AI assistants.
  • AI assistants quote them easily. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity look for clear passages that answer a doubt. A question followed by a direct answer is exactly that.
  • Google understands them better when marked up. With structured data, Google knows that block is questions and answers.
  • They save you calls. If you get the same question on WhatsApp every week, the answer belongs on your website.
  • They remove fears before contact. Price, timing, whether you pay upfront, whether you work in English. One doubt answered is one barrier fewer.

How to choose questions for your FAQ section

Do not make them up: find them.

  • Your WhatsApp and email. What people ask again and again is what is on their minds.
  • Phone calls. Also note down the questions you hear for two weeks.
  • Reviews, yours and your competitors': what gets praised and what gets criticised.
  • Google searches. Type your service and look at the "People also ask" box.

Five or six good ones per page is enough.

How to write the answers

  • Answer first. "Yes, I am open on Saturday mornings." Then add detail if needed.
  • Short. Two or three sentences. If you need more, it may deserve its own page or blog post.
  • With concrete facts: prices, timings, areas, hours. A bare "it depends" helps nobody.
  • Self-contained. An AI may quote only that answer, without the rest of the page. Otherwise, if it says "as explained above", it falls apart.
  • With your name where it makes sense. "At Movement Clinic the first assessment lasts an hour." That way, quoted on its own, it still says who you are.

Where to put the FAQ section

  • On each service page, the ones about that service. They work best next to the information they refer to.
  • On the home page, the general ones: prices, area, how to get in touch.
  • A dedicated FAQ page can work, but spread across the website they usually help more.

What to avoid

  • Questions nobody asks, written only to squeeze in keywords.
  • Answers that hide the price or ramble.
  • Copying another website's FAQs: Google notices and so do your customers.

How I do it

On Nueva Página websites the FAQs come from what your customers actually ask, are written to stand on their own and are marked up for Google. It is part of how I get a website ready to be found by Google and by AI assistants; the full picture is in how to get recommended by ChatGPT.

An example FAQ section for a local business

To give you an idea, these questions work for almost any business with premises. How much it costs, with the price or a "from" figure. How to book and how far ahead. Whether you open outside normal hours, whether there is parking nearby and what happens if someone needs to cancel.

Then add the ones specific to your sector. For example, a dental clinic can answer whether it offers payment plans and a school whether there is a trial class. Google explains in its introduction to structured data how these blocks are marked up so it understands them better. To see how they fit with the rest of the copy, read copy for Google and AI. Every well-answered question is one more search you can appear in.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google show FAQs in search results?

However, these days it rarely shows them as drop-downs. They still help Google understand the page, and AI assistants use them to quote you.

How many questions should I include?

Four to eight per page is usually enough. Better a few useful ones than twenty fillers.

Can I change them over time?

Yes, and you should: if a new question keeps coming up, add it.

Will my website include an FAQ section?

Yes. Nueva Página websites launch with an FAQ section on the home page and service pages, marked up for Google. Work out yours in the cost calculator.
